Aboutayearandahalfago,ItookpartinmyveryfirstEnglishSpeechContest.WhenIstoodbeforethemicrophonewithalleyesstarringdirectlyatme,Icouldhardlyspeak.Istoodthere,embarrassedandhelpless,strugglinginvainfortherightthingtosay.Myfearshadparalyzedme.

WhilemypassionforEnglishhasneverchanged,Ilostmycouragetospeakinpublic.WhenmyprofessoragainencouragedmetotakepartinthisCompetition,Isaid“no.”Icouldn’tendureyetanotherpainfulexperience.Helookedmestraightintheeyeandsaidsomethingthatpiercedmyheart.Iwillneverforgethiswords.“Look,”hesaid,“Weallhaveourfears,andyouhaveyours.Youcouldtwistyourankleinabasketballgame,butthenbeafraidtoeverplayagain.Runningawaycanneverdispelyourfears,butactionwill.Awinnerisnotonewhoneverfails，butonewhoneverquits.”
